Summary: In this session, Dr Pragya Agarwal will be introducing the science of unconscious bias, what happens in our brains, how bias becomes prejudice, and how individual and systemic biases are linked together. Using real-world examples, Dr Agarwal will introduce how these biases can affect inclusion and finally end with strategies and tips on tackling biases.

Dr Pragya Agarwal is a behavioural and data scientist, two-time TEDx speaker, and founder of the research think-tank ‘The 50 Percent Project’. After her PhD at the University of Nottingham in the UK, she was a senior academic in leading UK and US universities for over 15 years. She regularly writes for publications such as Scientific American, New Scientist, Guardian, Forbes and so on. She is the author of ‘Sway: Unravelling Unconscious Bias’ (Bloomsbury) and ‘Wish we knew what to say: Talking with children about race’ (Hachette) that were published in 2020. Her next book ‘(M)otherhood: On the choices of being a woman’ (Canongate) is out on 3 June.
