High-quality teaching is the most important school-level factor in improving outcomes for children in our schools, and this requires an experienced, expert teacher workforce. Recent months have seen an increasing focus on developing the support available in teachers’ early careers, in particular through an increased focusing on mentoring and early career professional development. But what really makes a difference to retention of new teachers? How can mentoring and coaching be used effectively in teachers’ early careers? And what other CPD and support do they need? This panel session brings together voices from schools, from the Department for Education and from education research to explore these key questions and many more.
