‘OK’ or ‘not OK’ – the false dichotomy of mental health


This session will explore what may be missing in the mental health conversation. Teachers and students are either “OK” or they are “not OK”. This false dichotomy ignores the subtleties of the range of human mental states. It can prevent us from developing resilience, ownership and autonomy in people, and it can mean that the system of support for significant Mental Health issues (e.g counselling, therapy, medication etc) are overloaded dealing with some for whom a different intervention would be more appropriate. McKenzie and Iain will explore the value of coaching to support and augment the incredibly valuable work that counsellors etc do.
