Hidden Plastic – youth activism through humour and video
8 July | 10:00 am - 10:45 am
Zara (13) and Ashton (11) are siblings, who have been passionate about the ocean and all marine life from an early age. In 2020, they attended their first Ocean Heroes Virtual Bootcamp over 5 days in order to create their own campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of ocean-bound plastic, and more specifically, microplastics. Since then, they’ve become Ambassadors for the ‘youth activism incubator’ Planeteer Alliance and have had their skilled guidance to help them launch their ambitious campaign ‘The PepsiCo Interceptor Challenge’ on Earth Day 2022. Zara & Ashton enjoy tackling uncomfortable topics with ‘slightly humourous’ (their description) videos that can be found on their website: hiddenplastic.org They will discuss the impact climate anxiety had in motivating them to start Hidden Plastic, why the name, as well as why they believe youth have an important voice to add to the complex environmental issues of our day. Hint: their secret is being solutions-based!
