During this session an ex-student and his ex-teacher reflect on working together in an Independent Special School that supported children and young people with complex learning needs, communication difficulties and associated “challenging behaviour”. During the session we will critically explore ‘what worked and what definitely didn’t’ from the perspective of a pupil and his teacher. Drawing on literature and research relating to “Compassion” focused approaches in Education, the session will also offer some challenges to current policy and practice relating to ‘behaviour management’.
