How do you get children to REALLY talk? Even lively classes rarely develop ideas among themselves through discussion, always deferring to the teacher, and rarely listening with interest to one another. As classroom facilitators, we at The Philosophy Foundation have been honing the skills necessary to promote genuine oral enquiry in the classroom for a decade. Over the last year, we have studied transcripts of teacher-class interactions and identified the reasons why some teacher-talk promotes classroom discussion, and some stifles it. We’d like to share the results.
