Substance over style: developing expertise in school leaders

Increasingly, research tells us that leaders’ success is driven by expertise rooted in sound domain-specific knowledge. Despite this, common narratives based upon individual traits and generic leadership processes still prevail.
This session will explore conceptions of school leadership and propose a model of leadership rooted in expertise and knowledge. It will explore how we can better understand the problems leaders face, the most important things they do, the knowledge they need to do it and what this means for leaders’ training and development.
