Making the Difference – Driving school inclusion through workforce development

Outcomes for excluded pupils are shockingly poor, but each year more and more children are excluded. The Difference is a new programme which is creating a new generation of school leaders who are specialist in mental health and reducing school exclusion. The Difference participants will leave their mainstream schools for a leadership role in an alternative provision for two years. Here they will receive bespoke training, including an NPQ, in working with vulnerable children. They will then return to mainstream as senior leaders, leading on behaviour and/or inclusion. Via this programme, we will take the best teaching from the mainstream, to improve education and outcomes for excluded children, and develop expertise in mainstream, in working supportively with vulnerable children, to reduce school exclusion.
