‘Literature by heart’ – the role of knowledge and memory in the English curriculum.

What is knowledge in English and what role does memory play in the subject? In this session, Summer Turner will establish the key categories of knowledge in English and consider the implications of the psychology of memory at the level of curriculum design and classroom practice. Further to this, Summer will consider what it means to have a knowledge-rich curriculum in English and how we can adapt our teaching to achieve the maximum retention of knowledge in long-term memory without sacrificing the beauty of the subject.
