Some people still think that there is a necessary tension between teaching for rigorous knowledge and teaching for the development of ‘epistemic character’. They see the latter as a dubious add-on that threatens to distract from ‘core business’. But this tug-of-war view is misconceived. The classroom is better seen as always having multiple layers of learning that include the development of both knowledge and learning dispositions. You can’t not be teaching character. The only question is: what kind of character are you teaching, and is it the one you want?
