Is it time to re-learn the skill of writing by hand?

A levels and GCSEs exams are still written by hand. And yet we expect routine school assignments to be typed. Is the answer to type all exams? Or could it be that we need to re-learn and start again to teach writing by hand ie to write and think, structure, rephrase and edit simultaneously before committing to a flattering typed version? University teachers complain that students cannot construct sentences, frame logical arguments, edit and spell. In our rush to embrace IT and all its opportunities, are we failing our pupils by not teaching them the simple – but essential – skill of writing?
