The Hackney Pirates develops literacy, confidence and perseverance in disadvantaged young people by providing extra adult attention and the chance to work on motivating publishing projects. And we do it aboard a pirate ship. Since moving into the social enterprise sphere, I have seen the incredible potential of communities to provide opportunities for the young people within them, as well as the power of a nurturing rehearsal space for vital learning skills, away from school or home.
