Challenging fake news at the grassroots: approaches to teaching current affairs at KS1 and KS2

Current affairs is pertinent to so many areas of the primary curriculum, from geography, history and PSHE to British Values, yet there is no formal requirement to ‘teach’ the news. In this talk, we look at how, arguably, it’s more important than ever that current affairs should be used to bring the world into the classroom to stimulate discussion, initiate debate, and engage harder-to-reach pupils, helping them to develop the critical thinking skills needed in an era of increasingly diverse and unreliable news.
